This part of Florida was originally explored by cartographers from Europe in the early 1500s. While originally called “Sarasota Key,” the name changed to its current one in the 1920s. Schools

Pine View School, Imagine School and Sarasota Academy of the Arts are all good elementary schools. For middle school, look into Brookside Middle School, Suncoast School for Innovative Studies and Oak Park School. High schools, such as Suncoast Polytechnical High School, Pine View School and Sarasota High School are good bets. Ringling College of Art and Design, New College of Florida, Sarasota County Technical Institute and University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee are also here.

Weather

The weather is humid and tropical. The average temperature is around 80 degrees Fahrenheit, while the average high in August is 83 degrees Fahrenheit, with a low of 62 degrees Fahrenheit. The winter low in January is 52 degrees Fahrenheit, making year-round living comfortable. Shorts, short-sleeve shirts, tank tops, dresses and skirts are comfortable daytime pieces. Pants, jeans, long-sleeve shirts and light layers, such as a hat and rain jacket, might be needed at night.

Go Outside

The Key Beach offers cool, white quartz sand and year-round lifeguards. There are also playgrounds and tennis courts to occupy beach-goers. Crescent Beach and Turtle Beach are other popular beaches. For a change of pace, visit the 60-acre, dog-friendly Phillipi Estate Park. There is a mansion, hiking trails, a kayak launch, fishing piers and a park full of greenery.

Get Cultured

There are plenty of nearby attractions when you need a break from the beach. The Ringling Museum offers air conditioning and art, while the Marietta Museum of Art and Whimsy has a botanical garden. Historic Spanish Point and the Classic Car Museum of Sarasota offer thrills for history buffs.

The Hub Baja Grill ($$$) serves up Southwestern classics in style. Chow down on pollo quesadillas, Island-Spiced Ahi Tuna, calamari, Cuban sandwiches, and lobster tacos. Sip a beer or margarita while you wait

Solorzanos Pizzeria ($) satisfies your pizza cravings. Start things off with a House Salad, and then take a look at the specialty pizzas. Try the Solorzano Supreme, a pizza with sauce, cheese, meatballs, pepperoni, sausage, bacon, mushrooms, peppers, olives and onions, or the Hoboken Heart Attack, which is cheese, tomato sauce, meatballs, pepperoni, sausage and bacon. Vegetarians can eat the Margherita, which consists of sauce, fresh ovoline mozzarella and basil. Large pasta dinners and desserts, including cannoli, tiramisu, gelato and cheesecake are also offered.
