Property Management in Fruitville, Florida
This suburb was believed to have been settled in the early 1910s or 1920s and is where Sarasota’s first airport was located. This airstrip was primarily used for military pilots. Business woman Bertha Palmer bought a large tract of land in Sarasota, including a large pasture near Myakka River.
Fruitville, Florida Details
In the late 1920s, Palmer Experimental Farms determined that the best growing crop in Fruitville is celery, contrary to the town’s name! Around the same time, a municipal airport opened just north of town. In the Great Depression, a big portion of Palmer’s estate was purchased by the government, creating jobs for millions of young men. In 1940, construction began on the local school.
Property Management and What It’s Like Today
Right in town is the famous Big Cat Habitat and Gulf Coast Sanctuary, which is home to a variety of big cats such as Barry the Siberian Tiger and Mia the Liger (they’re real, and not just in Napolean Dynamite)! The Big Cat Habitat also has monkeys, goats, and other fun creatures, a must-see for locals and visitors. Also, in town is the Detwiler’s Farmers Market, where locals go to pick up local-grown food, including Amish butter, grass-fed meat, and of course ice cream.
At night, cruise over the Big Top Brewing, an in-town local craft brewing company that makes their own IPAs, Wheats, and Ales. Big Top plays on the circus history of the town, incorporating circus-themed artwork and names into its establishment and beers.
20 minutes southeast of town is Myakka River State Park, one of Florida’s oldest state parks. Visitors to this 58 square mile park can hike, canoe, kayak, boat, fish, camp, bicycle, bird watch, and stay in cabins. Spot alligators at the viewing boardwalk over Upper Myakka Lake or on a boat tour or birdwatch in the tree canopy walkway. Other wildlife such as deer and turkeys are also present.
This area of Florida has notably great weather. While in the winter, the temperature generally ranges from the low 50s to the low 70s, in the summer, the temperature goes up from the low 70s to the 90s. It does not rain often, making this area a great spot for outdoor activities and soaking up the sun.
Downtown Sarasota is just a 10-minute drive west, and the famous Siesta Keys are a short drive south of there. The waters here are astonishingly clear, and the white sand feels like sugar when walked on barefoot. Bring plenty of sunscreen – you’ll want to stay on this beach for a while.
Just north of downtown is the Ringling Museum, a favorite of locals and visitors alike. The Ringling is a circus museum, art museum, theater, and playground in one. You may want to spend the whole day there (if you forget to bring food, just stop in the restaurant)!
North of Sarasota is a long string of beaches on longboat key, a must-visit spot. On this key is the highly-rated Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium.
